Shelley Sanders, M.D., thinks of herself as a health coach for her patients. "As a doctor, my job is to provide tips and coaching so each person can experience the best quality of life possible," she says.
She works to ensure that her patients have an active role in their treatment. She believes that every person is the author of his or her health, and emphasizes shared decision-making between patient and physician.
Dr. Sanders received her undergraduate degree from Walla Walla College in Washington and earned her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, New York. She completed her internship and residency at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.
In her free time, Dr. Sanders enjoys windsurfing, gardening and reading poetry. She also received a master's degree in theological studies from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn.
Personal Statement: I chose St. Vincent for my residency and have stayed on as faculty because I am drawn to the patient-centered culture and the academic rigor of our program. One of my favorite things about St. Vincent is our shared commitment to innovation, iterative change and systems improvement. Change is the future of medicine, and I find it is rewarding and energizing to participate in change supported by our culture of commitment to excellence.
