Dr. Stempel is a native Oregonian. He graduated from Jesuit High School and then left the Northwest to attend Santa Clara University in the Bay Area, where he received his undergraduate degree in biology. He returned to his hometown to pursue his medical degree, graduating from Oregon Health & Science University. He also completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecolgoy at OHSU. In addition to obstetrics, Dr. Stempel's clinical interests include minimally invasive and pelvic support surgery.
In February 2009, Dr. Stempel and his family led a surgical relief team to Guatemala. He and his family are also active members of the Mount Hood ski patrol, and enjoy playing golf, tennis and other outdoor activities.
