Biography
A neurologist, researcher and teacher, Ted J. Lowenkopf, M.D., joined Providence Health & Services in 2000 to start Providence Stroke Center. Dr. Lowenkopf supervises the inpatient stroke unit at Providence St. Vincent and has extended the model to Providence Portland Medical Center. Both units have received national certification as primary stroke centers. Providence St. Vincent was the first hospital in Oregon to receive the designation.
He was co-investigator for a $1.4 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to create a statewide stroke registry in Oregon. In addition to his work with Providence, Dr. Lowenkopf is an adjunct assistant professor in the Oregon Health & Science University Department of Neurology.
Dr. Lowenkopf received medical training at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, where he was involved in basic neuroscience stroke research. After an internship at Providence Portland Medical Center and a neurology residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, he completed a fellowship in cerebrovascular disease at Washington University in St. Louis. There, he helped implement the university's acute-stroke medical team response and conducted laboratory research on stroke.
