Program Details
A physician or health care provider must refer your child to Providence Neurodevelopmental Center for Children for an evaluation with a pediatric dietitian prior to participation in the Healthy 'n Fit program. The provider will also order lab work to measure your child’s blood sugar and cholesterol levels. After we receive this referral, we will contact you to schedule an appointment and register your child with Healthy 'n Fit.
The 2013 registration fee for the 10-week session is $250, plus the cost of the required nutrition assessment and lab work. Some insurance plans cover part of these costs. For Providence Health Plan (PHP) members, PHP pays $125 of the registration fee. Please contact your child’s insurance company to see what your coverage includes.
In class, registered dieticians and fitness specialists teach kids - together with their parents - about food, weight, exercise and body issues. Classes meet once a week for 90 minutes. Each class includes 40 minutes of group exercise. Children and parents are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes.
After exercising, everyone participates in the highly interactive class with our dietician. Discussion topics include:
- Portion distortion
- Emotional Eating
- How to eat more fruits and vegetables
- How to get more physical activity
- How to make healthy food choices at restaraunts, at school and with family and friends

Q: “My 11-year-old son is very active and eats healthy foods, but is still heavy. Will he grow out of the fat, or is there something we can or should do now? Kids tease him, and he’s very sensitive about being heavier than his friends.”
